Many of us don’t prioritise our sleep health, tossing and turning on an unsuitable bed or mattress for our needs, putting up with constantly being tired, or thinking that a health issue or mobility problem precludes us from getting a good night’s sleep. However, sometimes, just a little help can go a long way to ensure comfort and promote independence at night.
The newly-designed Adjustable Bed range from The Natural Sleep Company not only looks great, with customisable features to fit with the modern home, but can also help maintain good sleep quality, better health and can benefit people of all ages. Every bed and mattress is designed, developed, and custom-made to order in Ireland using the best quality materials, with a focus on natural fibres and organic materials.

Irish made
Founded in 1983 by husband and wife James Hayes and Mary Rose Fitzpatrick, theirs is a family run business with more than four decades of experience. As well as supplying mattresses to retailers and luxury hotels around Ireland, they started to specialise in making adjustable beds at their workshop in Ballylanders, Co Limerick, more than 30 years ago. Marrying natural materials and innovative technology the company also specialises in organic mattresses, which they sell online via naturalsleep.ie.
The Adjustable Bed range comes in three sizes – single (4ft), double (5ft) and super king (6ft). A solid beechwood base with a five-part moving action raises the back or feet with the touch of a button. The specially designed pressure relieving mattress moves with the bed and has been perfected over 30 years, for ultimate comfort and flexibility. The foam block core gives support and comfort at whichever position the bed is elevated to. A three inch layer of reactive smart foam moulds to hips and shoulders. A final layer of heat-regulating, naturally hypoallergenic, organic lambswool offers plush comfort. The whole mattress is then covered in the finest soft touch, moisture wicking organic cotton and can be turned to choose a slightly firmer, or softer side as preferred.
“We care,” says owner Mary Rose. “We want our customers to be comfortable at the end of the day, and we want to make things that bit easier. We take the time to listen and advise, and then get to making the adjustable bed to a person’s individual tastes and needs. We are confident our newly-designed adjustable beds not only look great but are the best out there in terms of the materials we use, the attention to detail and the workmanship that goes into making them.”
Custom comfort
The adjustable beds are made to order and can be customised to suit individual needs and decor. There are three classic colours of luxurious soft suede fabric upholstery to choose from: a blush beige, rich navy and elegant grey. There are also two leg styles to choose from, giving two different bed heights. Each bed comes equipped with a glowing LED light under the base surrounds, which gently illuminates the area around the base of the bed to guide footing in the dark.
The single (4ft) bed with one mattress is suitable for one person, and the double (5ft) and super king (6ft) beds are suitable for two people sharing a bed, with two dual controlled mattresses giving the flexibility for one person to sit up in bed, while the other can lay flat. A smaller 3ft single bed can also be made on request.
Small change, big difference.
Whether a person is looking for an adjustable bed because of health issues, mobility concerns, help to get in and out of bed, or just to be more comfortable at night, this small change can make a big difference.
“Hiatus hernia and reflux are the most common health conditions we hear about,” explains Mary Rose, “but help getting in and out of bed and sleeping a little raised up are the main reasons people buy an adjustable bed.”
Raising the head and elevating the feet can help with sleep apnoea, snoring, asthma and breathing problems, the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn and can give relief to swollen legs and cramping. The flexibility to change the bed’s position can help ease back pain, sciatica, hernia and arthritic pain and improve circulation. An adjustable bed can also help with conditions such as Parkinson’s, motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, fibromyalgia, and spinal injury (though a profiling bed whose overall height moves from low to high is sometimes more suitable for more serious conditions).
